Nigeria first participated in the Olympic Games in 1952, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except for the boycotted 1976 Summer Olympics. The nation has never participated in the Winter Olympic Games.
Nigerian athletes have won a total of 23 medals, mostly in athletics and boxing. The national football team won the gold medal in 1996.
The Nigeria Olympic Committee, the National Olympic Committee for Nigeria, was created in 1951. but between then an now not much medals had been won compared to the likes of other countries bagging lots of medals. Nigeria has a total of 23 medals, 3 of which are Gold, 8 of which are silver, and 12 of which are bronze. The 2012 olympics wants to take the shape of the long past ones held where the country bagged no medals. We just pray that what happened in 1952 Helsinki, 1954 Melbourne, 1960 Rome, 1968 Mexico city would not repeat itself. Have your say on this.
