For those that don't know him, Julian Paul Assange is an Australian
editor, activist, political talk show host, computer programmer,
publisher and journalist. He's also the founder of the famous
WikiLeaks The site acts as a channel for
worldwide news leaks, with a purpose of creating open governance. After
a European Arrest Warrant issued for Assange concerning allegations in
Sweden of rape and sexual assault, and a failed appeal in Britain
against extradition to
Sweden, Assange broke his bail
conditions on 19 June 2012 to enter
the Ecuadorian embassy in London requesting political asylum on the
grounds that he was being
persecuted. Ecuador granted
Assange asylum on 16 August 2012. The British government has said
that it will arrest him when and
if he leaves the embassy, and has
warned the Ecuadorian authorities
of legal provisions that could allow
Britain to remove the diplomatic
status of the embassy building where Assange has obtained refuge.
Today he addressed his supporters and media agencies in front of the
Ecuadorian Embassy. He spoke for about 10 minutes before going back
inside the building, and called for an end to the
U.S.-led "witch-hunt" against WikiLeaks, its
staff, and its supporters. Assange described Ecuador's move to grant him
asylum as "gallant". He also outlined a number of
points he wished to see in the future. But one
of the provisions of his asylum would be that
he is not allowed to give political statements or
face annulling of his status -- a balance he was surely careful to
manage. He acknowledged the Governments of
Argentina,Ecuador,Venezuela,Brazil,Mexico,Chile,Honduras,Bolivia and
more south American countries for their support and also acknowledged
the people of the United Kingdom, U.S.A and Sweden who didn't go along
with their government.
